INTRODUCTION

Marius Lucien Coetzee was born in South Africa on 30 May 1969. He matriculated with ‘A’ levels from the Pretoria High School for Art, Ballet, Music and Drama (now known as Pro Arte). He continued his studies at the Pretoria University in Political Sciences and Music (as a minor) specialising in Art Singing Performance.

In 1993 he was the recipient of a SAMRO scholarship for studies in the field of Arts Management. He spent this period in Helsinki, Finland. During the course of this year he became very interested in Finnish arts/culture and the dynamics of contemporary Finnish aesthetics. Shortly after his return to South Africa (October 1994), he was appointed as the Marketing Manager of the State Theatre Dance Company. In December 1994 the State Theatre Dance Company sent him on an extensive study visit to Belgium and the Netherlands to observe the marketing sections of acclaimed dance troupes in Brussels (Rosas, Ultima Vez) and Amsterdam (National Ballet), Rotterdam as well as The Hague.

In 1997 he received a grant for an internship in Israel where he visited the marketing sections of the acclaimed Bat Sheva Dance Company, New Israeli Opera, the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra as well as other prominent Israeli ensembles.
